A Note to Readers
The rare cancer syndrome afflicting the Callaghan family is real. It was first described by Drs. Frederick Pei Li and Joseph F Fraumeni, Jr, in 1969, and the inherited genetic mutation was identified in 1990. As noted by Michael's pediatric oncologist, carriers of this autosomal dominant disorder have an extraordinarily high risk of developing cancer, often at an early age—and sometimes by more than one type.
